Increased antimicrobial resistance is one of the key healthcare challenges around the world. The misdiagnosis of disease etiology is due to the difficulty in quickly identifying whether an infection is viral, bacterial, or co-infection, resulting in the misuse of antibiotics. This not only alters the trajectory of patient care, but it can also lead to additional costs for hospital admissions and length of stay. Based on computational integration of the levels of three host immune system biomarkers the LIAISON®MeMed BV® assay helps in distinguishing bacterial from viral etiologies in pediatric and adult patients with lower respiratory tract infection or clinical presentation of fever without source, guiding downstream clinical management while also fighting the problem of antimicrobial resistance.
